That day,along with the thousands of Americans who died,the Japanese people experienced the worst loss of life due to a terrorist attack in the history of Japan.(P)

この事件は多くの米国民の命を奪っただけでなく、多くの日本国民の命も奪い、日本の歴史上においても、最悪のテロとなりました。

コンサートに先立ちまして、ここで在日米陸軍・第9戦域支援コマンド副司令官　ジョセフP.マニング大佐より挨拶がございます。

On behalf of Major General Jhonson,Commanding General of U.S.Army Japan,it my great honor to welcome you to the Peace and Goodwill Concert sponsored by the Aoyama Omotesando District Association.

ご来場の皆様、こんにちわ。
在日米陸軍司令官、アランD.ジョンソン少将に代わりまして、皆様、本日は青山表参道商店会、協力によります、日米合同平和コンサートへようこそお越し下さいました。

This concert is dedicated to the memor of the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001...and to all of the organizations and people who have supported the U.S.Army at Camp Zama in all sorts of different ways in the days,weeks and months following those terrible events.

私達は、このコンサートを2001年9月11日のテロ事件で犠牲になられた方々へ捧げると共に、事件発生以来、様々な形で在日米軍キャンプ座間への支援を下さっております組織、並びに関係者の皆さま方へ捧げたいと思います。

Although seven months have passed since the day that has become known as 9-11,we must never forget that more than 3,000 people were killed in a matter of hours when four U.S.planes hijacked by terrorists crashed in New York,Washington and Pennsylvania.Not all of the victims who were killed,injured or are still missing were Americans. All tolled,there were people from more than 60 countries who were victims of the World Trade Center disaster including 23 Japanese citizens.

その後この事件は｢9・11｣として知られることとなりました。
事件発生から数ヶ月が経過しましたが、我々は4機の米国航空旅客機がハイジャックされ、ニューヨーク、ワシントン、ペンシルバニア州に墜落して3000人もの尊い命を一瞬にして奪っていったこの事件を忘れてはなりません。何より、この事件の犠牲となったのは、米国国民だけではありません。この事件によって23名の日本人犠牲者を初めとする、60カ国以上もの国々の人たちが世界貿易センターの惨劇の犠牲となりました。

As our experience shows however,catastrophic events sometimes have a way of bringing people closer together and inspiring the best of the human spirit,cooperation and caring.In the aftermath of the tragic events of September 11th,there was an outpouring of sympathy,sorrow and support for the United States of America and Americans around the world.Here in Japan,our Japanese friends and neighbors from Prime Minister Koizumi on down...our counterparts-the Ground Self-Defense Force,the Japanese Police,the mayors of our neighboring citiies and even the lady at our favorite local Japanese vegetable market...have-through their words and deeds-expressed their sincere condolences and support.I represent all of the Americans here in the audience today when I say we have been genuinely touched by the compassion and cooperation of the Japanese people.

しかし、この悲劇的な事件は、人々の魂を奮い立たせ、互いに協力し合い、思いやる気持ちを向上させることとなりました。
9月11日の惨劇の後、米国、そして米国民には、世界中から哀悼の言葉と協力の気持ちが伝えられました。ここ日本におきましても、小泉首相を初めとする多くの日本人の友人によって多大なる支援を賜ることとなりました。陸上自衛隊、警察関係者による協力、近隣の市長さんたちからは心のこもった哀悼の言葉と支援を頂きました。また、近所の八百屋さんのお母さんから温かい お言葉を頂戴いたしました。私は日本国民の皆様から頂いた思いやりの気持ちと多大な援助に強く心を打たれました。この会場に集まったアメリカ人全員、同様に感じていると確信しております。

This Peace and Goodwill concert today,for example,would not have been possible if it were not for the generous support of the private citizens and merchants in the Aoyama neighborhood in Tokyo who took up a collection to show their support for the U.S. Army Band and Army soldiers and families stationed at Camp Zama. Many of you may not have known until today that the U.S.Army Band from Camp Zama has had a long-standing friendship and association with the Aoyama neighborhood in Tokyo and has performed annually in their festival parade.

この日米合同平和コンサートは、東京青山にある商店会の皆様が募金活動を行なって下さった結果、開催が可能となりました。
ご存知でなかった方も多いでしょうが、青山、表参道　商店会の皆様は、在日米陸軍軍楽隊が毎年青山まつり参加を通じてお世話になっている、15年にも及ぶ長年の友人であります。

To the citizens of the Zama,Sagamihara,Yamato and Yokohama,on behalf of all of the soldiers,civilians and familiy members of U.S.Army Japan,I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation for your support in the aftermath of the tragic events of September 11th and for your understanding and cooperation with enhanced security measures that were implememted on our military installations.

この場をお借りしまして、座間、相模原、大和、横浜といった近隣都市にお住まいの皆様方に対し、9月11日の事件以来、基地警備が強化された状況に、ご理解とご協力を頂きました事、在日米陸軍の軍人、そして家族を代表して心から感謝の意を表したいと思います。

To the National Police and Kanagawa Police forces and all of the Japanese police forces,we thank you for providing the added protection and security for all of our U.S.military installations. We thank you keeping all of us and our families−Americans and Japanese alike-safe and secure from any threat of danger. It is a great comfort to know that you are always there in any kind of weather or situation.

神奈川県警を初めとする警察関係者の皆さま。雨の日も、風の日も、我々の施設警備にあたり、アメリカ人、並びに日本国民の安全確保に当たって頂き、本当にありがとうございます。

To our brethren in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force,we salute you for standing shoulder with us in the fight against terrorism.We appreciate your support to the force protection and security of our installations and facilities here in Japan and the support the Self-Defence Forces are providing to Operation Enduring Freedom. A special thanks to COL Horiguchi and his outstanding soldiers of the 4th Engineer Group who work and live with us on Camp Zama for their complete support and cooperation.

そして我々の同士であります、陸上自衛隊の皆さま。我々と力をあわせ、共にテロに立ち向かって頂いております事に敬意を表します。
自衛隊員の皆様には、日本における基地警備任務に加え、不朽の自由作戦への支援に感謝します。
特に、堀口一佐を初めとする第4施設群の皆様には、共にキャンプ座間に暮らし・勤務する者として、絶大なご支援とご協力を頂いております事、深く御礼申し上げます。

Thank you to the Ground Self-Defense Force Eastern Army Band,the Kanagawa Prefecture Police Band and the U.S.Army Japan Band for your participation and performance today in this very special concert. Your presence here today represents the solidarity and close cooperation between the Ground Self-Defence Force,the Japanese Police Forces and the U.S.Army.

陸上自衛隊東部方面音楽隊、神奈川県警音楽隊、そして在日陸軍軍楽隊の隊員達。この特別なコンサートへの参加と、演奏に感謝します。皆さんの演奏は今日における陸上自衛隊、日本の警察と在日米陸軍の絆の強さを証明するものです。

Finally,on behalf of Major General Johnson,I want to thank each and every soldier,civilian and family member of the United States Army Japan for your many sacrifices,dedication to duty and patriotic service to our nation. A special thanks and tribute goes to our reservists who have left their families and friends back at home to respond to the call to duty here with us in Japan. I also want to recognize our Military Police and MLC guard force for the outstanding job they have done since 9-11 and continue to do 24-7.

最後に、ジョンソン少将を代表し、在日米陸軍の全ての軍人、軍属、家族、そしてアメリカから来ています予備役の軍人達、軍務遂行に係わる様々な犠牲、国への献身的な貢献に対して、感謝の意を表します。また憲兵隊員、並びに日本人従業員の警備隊員一人一人に、これまでの厳しい労働状況の中、24時間体制で立派にその任務を果たしてくれることに、お礼を言いたいと思います。

We are grateful for our special friendship with the Japanese people. This concert today is a way for us to express our appreciation.We dedicate this concert to peace and goodwill,we will prevail in our efforts to make the world a sefer and more peaceful place in which to live.

我々は日本国民の皆様方との特別な友情に対し、心から感謝の気持ちで一杯でございます。このコンサートはそんな我々の感謝の気持ちを伝えるコンサートです。そして、本日の音楽を平和と友好への祈りを込めてお届けします。平和と友好への願いを共有する友人達と共に、平和で安全な世界の構築に向けて努力を惜しまぬ所存でございます。
